What Does the Civil Engineer Do?

The main task that the Civil Engineer has to carry out, during the purchase process, is to draw a topographical plan of the boundaries of the land or property that you are purchasing. It is very rare that the seller has an up to date topography that is acceptable to the Land Registry. Also, since the contract refers to the topography, it is important that the buyer has accurate boundaries agreed. Similar to other countries a Greek's home is his castle and boundary disputes are common. Thus, if the boundaries are drawn and agreed at the outset, you will not be storing up problems for the future.

Our Business Partner, Manolis Nikollaidis, will also carry out a structural survey, if you wish. This will give you peace of mind that the structure of the building is sound, where you are not buying a renovation property or ruin. Crete is in the earthquake zone that encompasses most of Greece and Turkey, so structural damage can be common in older properties. If this survey is undertaken at the same time as the topography considerable savings can be made.

If you simply need advice about alterations that you wish to make to the property, extensions that you wish to build, rough costs of renovation, our Engineering and Architectural team can supply these. They can, of course, also draw up full detailed plans, obtain planning permission, negotiate the building permits necessary, arrange builders and project manage to completion. If there are any other services you require please contact us to see if they can be carried out.
